Socialization: Crash Course Sociology
Step 2: Select your Topic
Choose 2 political issues of special importance to you. These can be any political issues (gun rights, abortion, immigration reform, welfare, etc).
Step 3: Analyze and Evaluate
After choosing your 2 issues, make connections where and how agents of socialization influenced your current perspective on them. Consider two or three of the following agents of socialization:
Family
Schools
Peers
Mass Media
Work
Demographic Status
Think About:
What influenced you?
Do you know why you believe the way you believe?
Review at the agents of socialization in Chapter 6 and evaluate the impact these had on your current perspective of the issues you selected.
Step 4: Write the Paper
The paper will actually be 2 separate essays, each about a page in length. Each essay will be composed of three parts (paragraphs):
Part 1: State the first issue and its importance to you. DO NOT defend your position, just what your current perspective is on the issue. Everyone is entitled to their beliefs and this paper is not about those beliefs but their origins.
Part 2: State which agents of socialization have most influenced your perspective on the issue. You should use two or three agents. How did they impact your understanding of the issue?
Part 3: Answer, and explain your answer to the following question: If these agents of socialization were absent in my life, would I have the same perspective on the issue?
Refresher: Writing College-Level Paragraphs
While this is a reflective paper examining how agents of socialization influenced your perspective on political issues, your paragraphs should still reflect college-level writing.
This refresher will give you an overview of how to write college-level paragraphs. In addition, consider taking advantage of the TCC Writing Centers: The TCC Writing Centers are great resources and eager to help with any writing need.
Paper Formatting Information
Write your paper on a Word document.
Type your name and the date at the top of the first page.
Title: Write a title of each of the essays.
Center the title.
Font: Use an easy to read font like Times Roman or Garamond
Font Size: 11 or 12 is the standard font size
Font Style: just use regular text, no bolding or italics
Margins: use 1-inch margins on all sides (older versions of Word have bigger margins so you will need to change them)
Spacing: double-space your text, there is still one “standard” double-space between paragraphs
Submitting the Assignment
Submit the paper in the section assigned for the Political Socialization Essay in Blackboard. Your submission will consist of one document containing two “stand-alone” essays of three paragraphs consisting of about 1 page each.
