Semi-permeability of a Cell Membrane
Semi-permeability of a Cell Membrane
NOTE: This experiment requires several days to complete, so start early in the week.
Objectives:
To demonstrate the semi-permeability of a cell membrane
To gain an understanding of osmosis
To write a formal lab report
Procedure:
Measure and record the circumference around the center of the egg. You can use a flexible tape measure or a string & ruler to measure the circumference.
Record the general appearance of the egg at the start of the experiment.
Place the whole egg inside a jar or cup. DO NOT crack the shell.
Completely cover the egg with vinegar.
Observe immediately, and then periodically for the next 72 hours. Note your observations.
Carefully remove the egg after 72 hours in the vinegar and measure its circumference again.
Compare the appearance of the egg before and after being in the vinegar.
Put corn syrup in a clean jar and then submerge the egg in the jar of corn syrup, and let it sit over night.
Compare the appearance of the egg before and after sitting in the corn syrup.
Put fresh water (tap or distilled works) in a clean jar. Place the egg in the jar of water and let it sit again over night.
Compare the appearance of the egg before and after the sitting in the water.
Reporting:
After completing the experiment and recording your results, write up a formal lab report. You may wish to draft an outline outline to organize your report sections. Be certain to include citations for any references you include in the report. The required lab report format is provided below.
