This semester, you will conduct an original investigation using qualitative research as a method. You may select one of the qualitative analysis options presented in Chapter 9, section 6 of your textbook. To learn more about each option, review the Punch textbook, “Chapter 8: Collecting Qualitative Data” and “Chapter 9: Analyzing Qualitative Data.”

To facilitate this study, you will want to select an artifact for analysis. The artifact must be publicly accessible and not require any special permission to access it. Most printed and web-based documents will work well for this assignment. Good choices include visual items such as images, websites, film, music, video, audio, podcasts, speeches, and news articles.

Human subject participation is not permitted due to Institutional Board Review limitations. Thus, make sure your artifact doesn’t require any human interaction (interviews, focus groups, or surveys). More so, this is a narrowly focused research project. Your dissertation topic may be used as a jumping-off point, but your research project must follow these instructions specifically (thus, no mixed-methodology or other approach is allowed).

Since we are communication scholars, your topic should intersect communication in some way. Topic ideas can span many disciplines, but the problem or issue or concern or interest should squarely consider how we communicate, what we communicate, when we communicate, why we communicate, and with whom we communicate, and the messaging content and its meaning.

• Research the topic to understand as much about it as possible. Look for news articles as well as scholarly peer-reviewed journal articles that offer background or insight.
• Consider a framework or theoretical standing from which to view the problem and launch an investigation. Grounded theory is a good choice, as is Miles and Huberman’s framework for qualitative data analysis.
• Develop one or two research question(s) to guide your investigation. These should be open-ended, non-directional questions that allow you to pursue inquiry as you collect and analyze data. Hypotheses are not used in qualitative research.
• Select an artifact for analysis. The artifact must be publicly available and must not require human subjects as participants. Digital stories, news media, social media, websites, and other Internet-related content are good choices.
• Decide the approach that will work best for analysis. See the Punch textbook (9.6) for definitions and explanations of common techniques such as narrative, conversation, discourse, semiotics, documentary, or textual analysis.
• Target a range for data collection to limit your sample for observation and analysis. One week, for instance, is acceptable for comparison of news stories; two weeks of Twitter “tweets” or one post with a large volume of FaceBook comments works well. More so, one TV episode rather than an entire season or one film or music video rather than a whole compilation will be “doable” within our semester timeline.
• Determine your sample size. In qualitative data, the sample size is relative so choose wisely based on availability and your time.
• Collect your data for analysis.
• Identify main themes, categories as well as units of analysis.
• Create a codebook and coding sheet to document your findings. See Chapter 9.
• Present your findings in a well-written report that adheres to APA style, current edition. Include a title page, abstract, introduction, literature review, method, results, conclusion, references, and appendices (e.g., codebook, coding sheets, etc.). Tables, figures, and images should be cited per APA style.
• Length of pages: Twelve (12), not including title page, abstract, references, or appendices.
• Required sources: A minimum of eight (8) scholarly and peer-reviewed references are required. Other credible sources such as news articles, professional trade magazines, and websites may be used. The Punch textbook and the Bible are also allowed.
