Choose one aspect of Discourse Analysis which we have explored in this subject, and write an essay
that will comprise the following two parts of the Genre Analysis Discussion Essay:
First part of the essay: Discuss your chosen topic in relation to the relevant literature (approximately 500words).
Second part of the essay: Identify an area in real life and discuss how you may apply (or adapt) thetheoretical knowledge you have acquired about your chosen topic (approximately 700 words).

– Use real life examples to support your opinions and ideas.
– Write in clear academic English – good use of punctuation, paragraph structure,
grammar and spelling.
– Keep to the word count of 1200 words (+/-10%)
Genre analysis based on English for specific purposes (ESP) perspective informs instructions
and guidelines in teaching second language writing. Genre analysis of written text based on
this approach includes analysis of communicative function and purposes and situational
context of the text. In this essay I will discuss theory of genre analysis from the perspective
of ESP in second language writing and its application in teaching writing in second language.
ESP approach to genre analysis is based on John Swales theory. initially
communicative purpose(s) was considered to be an essential element to define
genre, this notion was revised due to new understanding that a genre may have
multiple communicative purposes.
