An artificial intelligence (AI) from outer space has accessed our historical information on The Doctrine of Discovery and Manifest Destiny. The AI thinks this is the correct process for first contact with earth. The AI has sent a message saying to expect its arrival and immediate implementation of its own version of the doctrines – only humans that can fly on their own and make calculations at the AI’s speed will be considered worthy. It said the United States would be first!
You are the earth’s spokesperson and have been tasked with writing to the AI. What would you write in 600 words or less?
Guidelines to write your message:
Section 1: Explanation – Summarize the issue.
Explain why you are the spokesperson? What do you want? Briefly summarize what the rest of your message will reveal. (1 PARAGRAPH)
Your complete message/essay/speech should be a minimum of 300 words and maximum 600 words. Our technology does not allow for a longer message.
The AI hates bad grammar so use correct spelling, punctuation marks, capital letters etc. Avoid abbreviations. Review your work because our lives depend on it!
Section 2: Evaluation – Use evidence to explain issue.
Because the AI is highly logical, it needs to be convinced with facts.
Using the readings from CH 11 and the videos, you need to convince the AI that you understand The Doctrine of Discovery and Manifest Destiny (Define Them – 1 PARAGRAPH). You need to convince the AI that you are the world’s expert, otherwise, the AI will not take you seriously.
The AI needs to see the issue from two different viewpoints. Fortunately, you happen to know three viewpoints – Functionalism, Conflict Theory and Symbolic Interactionism.
Describe viewpoint #1 using one theory. What decisions or actions would this approach recommend? How would these decisions affect us locally, nationally, globally? What would be the result of using this theory? What biases would manifest? (1 SEPARATE PARAGRAPH)

If you disagree with both theories, explain what would be your own approach and explain what would be the main reason for choosing that approach rather than the other two? Explain what biases you have that led you to make this judgement?
Because the AI is also highly visual, it needs to see an image/chart/table OR graph that supports your argument (embed the image inside the essay/speech). This is the reason your message can only be a maximum of 600 words because the image will take a lot of space. No pressure, but all our lives are in your hands!
Adding Images to Discussions:
In your control panel above there is an icon that will “Embed Image” – it is the rectangle with mountains and a sun.
Drag and drop an image into the discussion or you can paste the URL of an image (not the webpage it is on).
If you have trouble with this, you can also download the image to your computer. Click on “Upload an Image” and your files should pop up. Select the picture you would like, then press submit.
Once the picture is in the discussion, you can adjust the sizing to better fit the discussion (some images will be huge). You can also add more than one picture to discussion boards. Tip: It is best to add an image before typing words below. This may alter where the start of a paragraph appears
